Quotations & Manners of Quoting

A quotation should always be provided with quotation marks which are a pair of double commas at the beginning and the end of the quoted text („ ”). All cited words words should be framed with quotation marks. („the text of the quotation")

1. Shortening Quotations

A quotation may be shortened by inserting an ellipsis (…) either at the beginning, at the end or in the middle of the quotation which designates that in that particular place a fragment of text has been deleted, e.g. because of its smaller relevance for the article.

Example:

„O czym więc będziemy mówić w tym roku? Właściwie (…) chciałbym spróbować w jakimś stopniu zamknąć, zakończyć serię badań. Wszystko to drepcze w miejscu; wiele rzeczy się powtarza i wiele pozostaje bez związku ze sobą (…). Słowem jak to się mówi, nic z tego nie wynika”3.

2. Emphasis in a Quotation

It is allowed to interfere in the text of quotation by spacing out a fragment. It should then be followed by the authors comment in square brackets stating that it has been done by the author.

Example:

„Francuski filozof uważa, że  p o l i t y k a  j e s t  w o j n ą  [podkreślenie autora] prowadzoną przy użyciu innych środków. Odwrócenie zaś tej maksymy niesie za sobą pewne konsekwencje”8.

3. Author's Comment in a Quotation

Any author's comments should be given in square brackets:

Example:

„Filozofowie postrzegali prawo suwerena w sposób bardziej łagodny [szczególnie filozofowie nowożytni – A.F.], nie przyznając mu tak szeroko pojętej dowolności. Za przykład uchodzić może lewiatan Thomasa Hobbesa”5.

4. Quotation within Quotation

If a quoted fragment includes a quotation within itself it should then be marked with triangular signs (»a text of quotation within a quotation«).

Example:

„Biopolityka również jest nieodłącznym elementem rozwoju kapitalizmu, ponieważ »mogła przetrwać jedynie za cenę kontrolowanego wtłoczenia ciał w aparat wytwórczy« i dostosowania zjawisk populacyjnych do procesów ekonomicznych”42.
