Apocalypse of Saint John 12

Abstract

In the analyses carried out, the author takes into account the historical data of the text and the teaching of the Church on the subject of Mary. It should be noted that the woman represented in the sign combines the idea of modesty with receiving glory from God. It emphasises her role in giving new life. In contrast to it, the demonic Dragon swaggers and puffs, pretending to have unlimited power. It is the enemy of life, and it wants to be the ruler of the world, therefore it is against the Woman and the Newborn. The newborn child is the Messiah. The term basanidzo (12.2), not used normally for the labour pain, encourages to see the role of the Woman in the salvific work of the Messiah, which is connected with the cross and the birth of disciples to a new life. This is indicated by the fact that the Child is being taken after birth to God’s Throne, which means exposing the finale of Christ’s life, that is, the Paschal events that bring salvation to people. They are called the rest of the Woman’s offspring because she participates in their new birth to the kingdom of God. It can be seen that salvation is God’s work. It becomes a share of the human being thanks to the blood of the Lamb (Eucharist) and the commitment to preaching the gospel. The time of the Church is the time of struggle against evil. The rest of the offspring of the Woman (the Church) during this time is experiencing God’s help and solidarity of all beings, hoping to achieve victory in heaven.
