The Moralising Role of the Jesuit Drama in Modern Poland on the example of selected plays performed in Jesuit Colleges

Abstract

The primary role of the Jesuit drama performed in Jesuit Colleges in Modern Poland was religious and moral. This is how characterised it the famous polish comedy writer and Jesuit, Franciszek Bohomolec. The article aims to show the moralising role of the Jesuit drama in which always virtue wins and sin is always condemned. Morality is aboundingly rewarded, and the biggest reward is salvation. The Jesuit school theatre was a specific kind of pulpit from which the moral message was handed over to the audience. Morality was supposed to characterise human existence, and the message of the Jesuit drama was aimed to foster this idea.
