Conversation of Jesus with Nicodemus (Jn 3,1-21)

Abstract

The subject of exegetical-theological analysis is the text J 3,1-21, dedicated to the meeting of Jesus with Nicodemus, an important figure belonging to the circles ruling the religious and political life of Israel. During the conversation, the problem on the part of Nicodemus is too much mental concentration on the material reality and not on the spiritual heritage of Israel. Despite this difficulty, Jesus reveals in full the revelation of his mystery: his relationship with the Father and the role of the Spirit in the work of salvation. The human being is required to believe and ”do the truth” so that he/she may participate in the kingdom of God. In the text the dialogue with Nicodemus (3,1-11) becomes a monologue of Jesus (3,12-21) who comes into the world to reveal the path to eternal life. Jesus’ reference to Nicodemus’ statements and their correction is an example of how to lead a man focused on world affairs towards the supernatural reality.
